So I've been using the LinkedIn Resume Generator to easily sync up my resume with my profile. It's a really nifty app, but it is definitely still a little rough around the edges. Here are a few tips:

Bullet points

I discovered after some searching that the resume generator supports markdown syntax (but not your LinkedIn profile!). Here's my solution:

* Bullet 1
* Bullet 2
* Bullet 3

These asterisks are not rendered as bullet points on your main profile, but it doesn't look bad, and your resume is rendered with bullet points and appropriate line breaks. Close enough, I guess.

Page breaks

My resume was page breaking in an inconvenient spot--right after the header for one of my job entries. But the resume builder does not allow one to specify where the page should break. My solution? To pad the previous entry with blank characters. I tried appending several line breaks to this previous entry, but quickly realized that LinkedIn will trim the end of the entry if it only consists of whitespace.

How to get around this? First, I looked up the Wikipedia page for spaces in unicode, then I copied the empty space between brackets (looks like: ] [) listed under the Display column in the En Quad row, then I pasted it into the end of my previous job entry in LinkedIn. It looks like this:

(end of previous job entry):
For this work at XYZ Widget Co. I was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize...
[empty line]
[empty line]
[space character pasted in]

This tricks LinkedIn into thinking that there is content at the end of that previous entry and thus including the empty lines. This has the intended effect of padding the space between entries, thus forcing the page break to occur before the next entry begins.

Obviously, you should determine how much padding (how many empty lines) to add experimentally.

I would paste the character here for your convenience, but my blogging platform chokes on the character. Just click on the Wikipedia link above and follow the instructions.

Voila! Hope this helps someone.

From this point forward, this blog will revert to its original theme: technology-themed commentary on just about everything.

As many of you know, I recently decided to head back home after just over a year of service in my rural community in the province of Pichincha, Ecuador. I've been home for almost exactly two weeks and I finally feel ready to write about some of my experiences and my reasons for not opting to stay another year.

Before I delve into my reasons, I would like to mention that my exit interview with our Country Director (CD) was very cathartic for me. I was able to share some of my concerns about the program and I feel that, even though we may have disagreed on some minor points, the CD was very understanding and receptive of my feedback about the program. I am satisfied that he has a good idea of what the most pressing problems are for PCVs and that steps are already being taken to rectify my most pressing concerns. Throughout the process I was treated very well by the staff.

Therefore, I will not dwell on the negative. Why did I call it after a year? To put it simply: I ran out of things to do. I realized that if I were to spend another year in the town, I would accomplish very little, and this was unacceptable to me. A shark has to keep swimming or it dies from oxygen deprivation; I can sympathize. This was a very difficult decision but I realized that it was necessary in order to maintain my mental health.

Do I regret serving as a PCV? Not a bit. My goal coming in was to change the life of one individual, and I can honestly say that I did that and more. I participated in the founding of two different businesses, I taught English and ran a school garden for the better part of a year. I donated a projector and a printer to a school that previously had none. I was (hopefully!) a positive influence on many school-kids. And most importantly, I brought home a basketball championship to my parish. I was able to explore a beautiful and diverse country and forge relationships that will last my lifetime.

I'll never forget my community, and how kind people were to me. I hope to lead my life in the states with the same humility and grace that my friends in Ecuador exemplified. I stay in contact with my closest friends via Skype and plan to continue to do so.

Last but not least: I am very proud of my fellow PCVs who will continue serving another year. Many of them are making profound personal sacrifices for the ideals they believe in, and we should do everything we can to help them out. Please keep in mind that there are many deserving projects listed on the peace corps partnership program page; donations are tax-deductible.

I will end with a quote, one that got me through many tough days:

Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.

-- Mahatma Gandhi

Update: It’s been pointed out to me that any donation would not apply to your 2010 taxes. Sorry for the misinformation! But I still encourage you all to donate!

Raise your hand if you love doing your taxes!

I know, I know, they’re a pain. But I would like to mention that there is something that all of you can do to help Peace Corps volunteers do their jobs more effectively, and it doesn’t have to cost you a cent: You can donate to the Peace Corps! It is tax-deductible, and the money goes straight to worthy volunteer projects. For more information, check out the donation FAQ page.

Since I’m quite partial to Ecuador, I recommend the Ecuador Country Fund. However, I would like to mention that PCV Sarah Zelcer (who lives very close to me) is almost finished with the process of getting her project to help a women’s group listed on the Volunteer Project Page—when she gets listed, I will post a followup.

So, to sum it up:

How very lame, I know. Not only am I using Windows instead of Linux, but I’m using Lyx instead of LaTeX! The shame. However, I recently had to put together a rush-job document and my LaTeX is a little rusty. So sue me.

In doing so, I came across what I’m guessing is a quite common scenario: I wanted to include other content, such as an Excel spreadsheet and some PDF documents as addenda. I figured that it would be easiest if all my attachments were in PDF form. So I dutifully saved all my attachments as PDFs, and set out to include them in my Lyx document. Easy as pie, right? Boy, how wrong I was.

Now, I know that LaTeX as a whole and Lyx are geared towards the Unix community. I have always found that things always Just Work from inside an Ubuntu install, for instance. I understand that development is geared towards that audience. But I would be remiss if I did not mention the following.

In the default install of Lyx 1.6.7 for Windows, there is a dialog (Insert => File => External material => [select Template pdfpages]) to include a PDF document inside a Lyx document. This dialog does not work! On my install, it fails with the following error: “pdfpages.sty not found” (or “eso-pic.sty not found”). Additional steps are required to resolve this error.

The steps are the following:

From your start menu, right click and run as administrator the following entry: MikTeX => Maintenance (Admin) subfolder => Package manager (Admin)

Right-click, select Install, for the following packages: eso-pic, pdfpages

In some cases, I have found that only the first few pages of a PDF are included. To fix this,

Click on the embedded PDF. This brings up the “Lyx: External Material” dialog.

Click on the “LaTeX and Lyx Options” tab and enter the following: “pages=-“. This tells LaTeX to include all pages.

Additionally, if you wish to insert a table of contents (TOC) entry for the included PDF, you should add something like this to that same options line:

addtotoc={1,section,1,My PDF,my_pdf}

Combining the two options I’ve just mentioned looks like:

addtotoc={1,section,1,My PDF,my_pdf},pages=-

Here’s a video of me going through the entire process (and making a few mistakes along the way). You’ll notice that my initial TOC entry is incorrect, and the first PDF that is generated does not include the whole PDF that I’m attempting to include (thus the adding of the pages=- option).

Catching up a bit--I've been living in my new place for a few months now, and I recently got Internet hooked up! This has been slightly detrimental to my health and I estimate that I lost a week and a half of productivity. Imagine being addicted to something for 9 years of your life, having it taken away for 1 year, and then getting it back. Don't judge me.

I decided it was time to modify my behavior when a friend of mine gasped when she saw me and asked "why are you so pale?!?" But seriously, I'm learning to deal with my newfound connectedness and I make sure to leave the house a lot. The school semester is starting up soon, so this will be less and less of a problem.

This is my new place (the fence has since been completed):

The best part: the exquisitely-designed bathroom.
I still have a blog? A lot of things happened in a short amount of time and it seems that I've gotten a bit backed up.

Just before I left for a Christmas vacation, I played in a basketball tournament with a team of professors from my school district. We won the tournament! So even if I don't accomplish anything else in this town, at least the professors will forever remember me for that. Sports are a big deal here.

I spent Christmas with my entire nuclear family in Atlanta (quite a feat). It was really great to see everyone again; everyone is doing great--Sofia's looking to beat my record for master's degrees, Ignacio's being as intense as possible in medical school, Mom and Dad are flitting back and forth between Atlanta and San Juan and planning to visit me at some point soon.

After Christmas, I went to Romania to see this girl I'm pretty fond of and meet her family... And I finally learned how most Peace Corps volunteers felt when they first arrived in-country! I didn't speak a word of Romanian and it was a bit tough communicating with people, but I had a blast. Needless to say I'm going to brush up a bit on the language so that next time I can at least tell people that I eat glass and it doesn't hurt me.

After a tough farewell at the airport, I headed back to Atlanta for just under a day--and I was remarkably lucky that my plane made it in, as the airport had been shut down for several days just prior to my arrival. In a flash, I was on a plane back to Quito with suitcases bursting at the seams.

So I get picked up by a friend in Quito and he takes me back to my apartment in my site--at this point I'm severely jet-lagged and sleep deprived, as I hardly slept on any of my plane rides--only to find that mold and fungus have taken over. The apartment was always pretty humid but the combination of the change to rainy season and my prolonged absence had disastrous consequences; the place was unlivable and just about everything was slightly green and smelled acridly.

Awesome. Since my rent was due in 3 days, I made the decision that I would move. I found another place and came to an agreement with its owner, who said it would be ready shortly. I moved out, storing my things in a friend's spare room. Well, it turns out that this prospective landlord broke their word and backed out on our agreement--so I suddenly became homeless! I forgot to mention, I was also really sick from some exotic Romanian super-bug that I got from Adina. Pretty sweet homecoming, huh?

It took about 10 days of looking around before I finally settled on a new place. In the meantime I was able to sleep in PCV Sarah's sweet attic. That was a lifesaver.

I brought back a projector for the school, to aid the computing professor (profe Guido) in teaching his classes. So of course, upon my return, I find out that he has resigned and will be going to Miami to work. To sum it up: after working for the school for two years with no textbooks, projector, Internet access, or reliable computers, he decides he's had enough--at which point the school acquires a projector and should acquire Internet access in a few weeks.

This was the projector's first official use--to show this ooooolllld video of a lion hugging its adoptive human parents at Guido's farewell. You can't make this stuff up:

Guido is very much missed by all of us, but is now kicking ass and taking names in Miami.

I have recently bought a friend's phone line and DSL modem. In a week or so ("ya mismo"), employees from the phone company will install the line and I should be in business! Look forward to more regular updates at that point. In the meantime, I am playing a lot of guitar and watching the homestead in the hopes that the employees show up. To give this post some filler, here are some pro tips that everyone should know, vaguely in order of importance:

I have recently discovered a program called F.lux. It automatically adjusts the brightness of your computer screen so that it is appropriate to the time of day. I highly recommend it, as it decreases eye strain.

If you have more than one computer on the same desktop, synergy is an invaluable tool that allows you to share the same mouse and keyboard across multiple screens. This allows you to seamlessly switch between them and copy/paste text across computers.

For web browsing, I highly recommend Google Chrome with the AdBlock extension.

For PDF viewing, I recommend Foxit. It is much lighter-weight than Acrobat, and you're less likely to be targeted for malware since the user-base is so small.

For organizing your pictures, I find that there is no competition for Picasa.

If you download torrents, utorrent is hands-down the best client. Vuze hogs resources.

For downloading from newsgroups, forget alt.binz which is terrible. Use SABnzbd instead. Set it and forget it.

We were up 4 points after the first quarter, up 1 point at halftime, down 2 points after the third quarter, but we finally broke it open in the fourth and ended up winning 51-37! The other team had practiced together, had a clear height advantage, and had the home court advantage. My team never practices and is shorter, but what we lacked in preparation we made up in heart and intelligence. I am the de-facto captain, and at the end of the game they had me sign the scoresheet (an honor). Awesome!

After the game I had to hide out for a while because everyone wanted to give me free drinks and get me drunk to celebrate. I didn't hide well enough because I ended up a little tipsy.

Here are some pictures from my game. We're in blue. There are more on cara de libro:

That's me with the ball. Notice the immediate double team.

They were packing the middle.

The women also played basketball -- the other team's coach was a very animated nun.
